Seasonal Fruit Salsa Recipes: Winter Edition

It's pleasantly surprising to see how many types of fruit are in season during the winter. Citrus fruits like grapefruit and blood oranges are at their peak right now.

One more delicious way to enjoy these winter specialties is in fruit salsa. Refer back to our summer fruit salsa post for recommended knives and cutting boards. Keep reading to get tasty ideas for slicing and dicing seasonal winter fruit into sweet and savory salsa.

Seasonal Fruit Salsa: Clementine Cucumber Salsa

This salsa from My Cooking Spot is simple and versatile, which means you can whip it up fast and serve it with just about anything. Go basic with chips, take it up a notch with quesadillas, or spoon it over grilled chicken or pork. Mild English cucumber works well with sweet clementines and zippy diced jalapeño.

If your house is anything like ours, hide the clementines until you're ready to start chopping. Kids can take down a pound of clementines in no time.

Kiwi and jalapeno are a great combination in winter salsa recipes

Seasonal Fruit Salsa: Simple Kiwi Salsa

The bright colors and tart flavors in this salsa from Jerry James Stone make it ideal for those days when spring seems like it's just around the corner. It's another recipe that you can pair with a variety of dishes and adjust the heat based on how much jalapeño you add.

You'll want to eat this salsa fresh though, since kiwi doesn't hold up for long, even when refrigerated. Given how delicious it looks, we don't think that will be a problem.

Seasonal Fruit Salsa: Red Grapefruit Salsa

The sour tang of grapefruit makes it perfect in salsa, like this recipe from Robb Walsh, found on Sweet Life. Both the taste and texture of grapefruit complement the red onion and multicolored bell peppers. Scale up or down on the jalapeño depending on personal preference, and don't leave out the fresh cilantro.

This salsa is meant to be served with chicken fajitas, which sounds great to us. But like the salsas above, we think it would go well with chips, quesadillas, or some of the taco recipes we have featured in the past.

Pomegranate arils are a delicious addition to seasonal winter fruit salsa recipes

Seasonal Fruit Salsa: Pomegranate Salsa

This sweet-tart salsa from The Gunny Sack is one we expect kids will adore. With red cranberries, pomegranate arils and bright green kiwi chunks, it's perfect for the holidays, so keep it in mind for next year. We especially love Tonia's idea to serve this salsa in the pomegranate halves.

While the ingredients include clementines, strawberries, apples and pears, we might go with what's priced right at the grocery store. That's one of the best things about fruit salsa -- you can make it what you want it to be.
