Yes, Please or We'll Pass: Apple Pie Hot Dog
Posted by Julie on Sep 8th 2021
We’re big baseball fans at Chef’s Corner Store. We’re also willing to try all sorts of zany recipes, even when the combination of ingredients sounds a little odd. So when we came across this recipe that debuted at the MLB at Field of Dreams game, we thought it was perfect for the latest edition of “Yes, Please or We’ll Pass.” Keep reading to learn about this all-American concoction and what we thought of it.
Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie, and Chevrolet
Remember this commercial from 1974?
It puts Chevrolet right up there with baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie as an iconic symbol of America.
Last month, Chevrolet partnered with Guy Fieri to create a recipe mash-up featuring hot dogs and apple pie. We couldn’t think of a better celebrity chef to take on this challenge. But would the results be worth eating? We had to give it a try for ourselves.
Apple Pie Hot Dog: Two Great Tastes
The recipe was simple. Take a 3x5-inch rectangle of pie crust and top it with apple pie filling and bacon jam. Add a hot dog, and place another 3x5-inch rectangle of pie crust on top. Crimp the sides with a fork, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar and apple pie spice. Bake at 350ºF for about 20 minutes or until golden. Before serving, drizzle with apple mustard.
In fact, the most time-consuming part was the bacon jam. Fry six slices of thick-cut bacon (preferably applewood smoked bacon, of course) and crumble it. Whisk together brown sugar, honey, and apple cider vinegar, and stir in the crumbled bacon. This jam would make a fantastic topping for burgers or meatloaf. (Because what meat really needs is more meat.)
Because we bought pre-made rolled pie crust, we cut wedges instead of rectangles. This made our creation a bit messier and better suited to being eaten with a fork than as a handheld pie. We also topped ours with plain yellow mustard rather than whirling mustard and apple pie filling in the blender.
Apple Pie Hot Dog: Yes, Please!
This all-American creation was a pleasant surprise for the middle-aged baseball fan who thinks no meal is complete without meat. He was skeptical until he tasted it. Then he squirted mustard on it and had a second helping. We even ate the leftovers for dinner the following night. The teenage daughter refused to try it, even though she watched us devour ours.
We might give it another try with a few tweaks. Although FoodSided notes this recipe doesn’t call for folding hot dogs into apple pie, we don’t think that’s such a bad idea. We’d make our own apple pie filling, because the canned stuff is too bland, and stir round slices of hot dog into it. Then we’d add the filling to a blind-baked pie crust, top it with bacon jam, and finish it with a lattice-top pie crust to display all those wacky ingredients. Before serving, we’d whisk yellow mustard with brown sugar and honey, and then drizzle it over the top.
Why make these changes? Because the beauty of this recipe is the offbeat combination of flavors. Every bite should include hot dog and apple pie (and bacon jam and mustard).
Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, we’d encourage you to give this all-American mash-up a try. Guy Fieri and Chevrolet, you knocked this one out of the park.
