Slow Cooker Applesauce Recipes

We already lauded homemade applesauce in our Eating Seasonally in September post, but it's so good we're devoting a whole post to it. Homemade applesauce is delicious eaten on its own, but it's also a great addition to other recipes. You can substitute applesauce for oil when baking, and you can incorporate it into sauces for meat, especially pork.

Homemade applesauce is delicious eaten on its own, but it's also a great addition to other recipes.

Homemade applesauce is also easy to make, and it's even easier with a slow cooker. A recipe isn't even necessary, though it can be helpful to see what ingredients have been a winning combination for other cooks. We looked for different variations so we could offer you some options. We're sure one of these slow cooker applesauce recipes will suit your tastes.

What drew us to Blair's recipe was the texture of her applesauce. It's so smooth it looks almost like caramel. Not watery at all. To get this texture, you'll need to use an immersion blender. A potato masher won't cut it. We also love that she only adds a tablespoon of sugar to start. Depending on the apples you choose, you may not need to add any more sugar.

As easy as it is to make applesauce, there's no shortcut for peeling the apples. That's why we want to try Megan's recipe, because she leaves the skin on. As the apples cook, the skin softens and can be easily blended into the sauce. We like this approach for a few reasons. One, we don't like peeling apples. But even more than that, we don't like throwing away fiber and nutrients. We're going to try this recipe with super sweet Gala or Golden Delicious apples, which tend to have softer skin too.

Finally, we're curious about Mel's recipe for applesauce because she uses a specific blend of apple varieties. Not surprisingly, it's a combination of Gala, Golden Delicious and Honeycrisp. We're still hesitant to cook with Honeycrisp, but only because they are so good for snacking. But based on the feedback Mel's received on her recipe, this blend sounds like a winner. We also love her photo of an applesauce bowl scraped clean. That's the only downside of homemade applesauce -- it goes too fast!
