The Ankarsrum Original Mixer Stands Out

The Ankarsrum Original Mixer is smart, useful, and beautiful. It’s one of the most thoughtfully-designed kitchen electrics we’ve seen, and it does much more than knead bread dough and whip cream. Read on to find out why this mixer is at the top of our list.

Ankarsrum Original Mixer Basic Package

The  Ankarsrum Original Mixer is a stand mixer. We carry a variety of stand mixers. They all have their advantages, but the Ankarsrum stands out — even before we start to cover the various attachments that extend its functionality.

Size: The stainless steel bowl of the Ankarsrum has an 8-quart capacity, and the plastic beater bowl has a 4-quart capacity. But in spite of that oversized capacity, it is a remarkably small footprint of 11 x 14 x 16 inches. That’s only slightly larger than the Breville Scraper Mixer Pro, and smaller than the Kenwood Cooking Chef.

Design and Operation: The motor of the Ankarsrum is in the base of the mixer. It rotates the drive socket which attaches to the bowl. This design allows for easier access to the bowl while the mixer is in operation. It’s also key to the function of many of the other attachments that make this mixer so useful. We’ll explore those in greater detail in a bit.

Whether you’re using the stainless steel bowl or the plastic beater bowl, the Ankarsrum features 12 speed settings. The 12-minute timer allows you to set it and forget it, depending on what you’re mixing, of course.

Mixing Components: The stainless steel bowl works with either the dough roller or the dough hook, along with a scraper that attaches to the mixer body. The dough roller has a unique cylindrical design, different from the paddle most often used with stand mixers when making cookie dough or cake batter. The scraper is flush with the side of the bowl and scrapes down the sides as you mix. Because the bowl is attached to the drive socket, which is operated by the motor, the bowl rotates while the scraper and dough roller or dough hook remain stationary.

The plastic beater bowl does not rotate, but the beaters do. Use either set of double beaters; the balloon whisks are perfect for eggs, egg whites, and whipping cream, and the wire whips are designed for cake batter and light frosting.

Ankarsrum Attachments and Add-On Packages

The basic package is impressive on its own, but the range of attachments and add-ons make the Ankarsrum Original Mixer an even more compelling addition to your kitchen.

Nearly all of the attachments and add-ons use the drive socket. However, nearly all of them also require you to turn the machine on its side, which is another design aspect that makes the Ankarsrum unique.

Blender Attachment: This is one attachment that connects to a separate port instead of the drive socket. The blender container has a 5-cup capacity, which isn’t huge. But it’s fine for making smoothies for two, or blending soup in batches.

Citrus Juicer Attachment: This is another unique attachment, in that you don’t turn the machine onto its side. The bowl and the juicer attach to the drive socket, and the juicer rotates as you press half of a citrus fruit against it. The juice collects in the bowl.

Pasta Roller and Cutter Attachments: Make homemade pasta with these time- and energy-saving attachments. If you read our post about homemade pasta dough, you know how useful a pasta roller and cutter can be. Attach the roller to the drive socket and turn the Ankarsrum on its side to operate.

Slicer/Shredder Attachment: This attachment does some of what a food processor can do, without the bulky footprint and cleanup. It comes with three drums — a slicer, a medium grater, and a coarse grater. Choose your drum, attach it to the drive socket, and turn the machine on its side. Place a bowl or plate under the drum to collect your sliced or shredded ingredients.
